In today's first reading we listen to Job, that upright man whose world fell apart around him,
early in his discussion with his friends as to why this has happened to him. He is at a low point,
seeing no hope. His images are strong and we all can relate to feelings near despair at some time.
Sitting by itself this section of Job offers no comfort. And so we need to place it beside today’s gospel.
Here, people in dire need and feeling like Job, are being healed by Jesus… hope is being restored.
But listen closely to this narrative for it tells us even more. This hope that we seek… it doesn’t come
too easily! Jesus does two things. He gets close to the people in need. It is personal with Jesus! He also
understands that to re-gain this hope means overcoming evil, so he casts out demons.
That is what his life is about… preaching God’s hope in word and releasing it in action.
Jesus understands that this cosmic chaos affects us most personally. So, he invites us
into personal relationship with him. As we accept, hope casts out despair… that is how
he heals the brokenhearted!
Last semester we formed a partnership with NEIGHBORHOOD HOUSE.
Neighborhood House helps people right here in our eastside Charleston community – the area around Piggy Wiggly- who are economically poor, marginalized, and oppressed. Founded by the Sisters of Charity of Our Lady of Mercy it was the first Catholic social service agency in South Carolina. Their staff needs help: GED prep sessions, computer literacy training, parenting classes, book clubs, hot lunches, and clothing / personal needs. This great place is our neighborhood!
